Now let's learn more about Altitude sickness.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is a physical discomfort caused by the lack of oxygen when the human body quickly enters an area above 3,000 meters above sea level. In Xinjiang (e.g. Pamir Plateau, Kunlun Mountains, Tianshan Mountains), Tibet, Sichuan (e.g. Inacheng Yading, Siguniang Mountains) and other places, these areas are popular tourist cities and places of great beauty and scenery at higher altitude. Altitude sickness can seriously affect travel safety. So let's learn about its preventive measures, which can allow us to complete our travel in China happily and safely with good protection.

Preventive measures for Altitude sickness

Adaptation in advance: before entering the high-altitude areas, do not take a bath (especially hot bath), do not stay up late to ensure that the body's best state, but also in the lower altitude areas can first stay a few days, so that the body gradually adapted to the changes in barometric pressure, to improve the body's tolerance to the lack of oxygen environment. Or take the way of stepped ascent, every rise to a certain height, should stay for a period of time, and then gradually to a higher altitude.

Moderate Exercise: In the plateau area, strenuous exercise should be avoided so as not to aggravate the burden on the body. Activities such as moderate walking can be carried out to promote blood circulation and gas exchange.

Dietary adjustments: Eat more high-carbohydrate foods, such as rice, noodles and bread, which can provide energy and reduce the body's burden in a plateau environment. At the same time, alcohol and smoking should be avoided, keeping a light diet and avoiding excessive consumption of caffeine-containing beverages.

Improve work and rest: Ensuring sufficient sleep and good sleep quality will help the body recover and adapt to the plateau environment. After entering the plateau, pay attention to rest and avoid over-exertion.

Drug prevention: Medications to prevent Altitude sickness can be taken in advance under doctor's guidance, such as Rhodiola Rosea Oral Liquid, Alpine Rhodiola Rosea Oral Liquid, Acetazolamide and so on. These drugs can improve the body's ability to resist hypoxia, but they should be taken some time in advance to be effective. At the same time, it is recommended to carry some necessary medicines, such as quick-acting heart pills, ibuprofen extended-release capsules, patchouli, etc., in case of emergency.

Pay attention to keep warm: the temperature in the plateau area changes a lot, we should do a good job to keep warm and avoid catching a cold. Colds can aggravate the symptoms of Altitude sickness and even cause serious complications.

Carry oxygen absorbing equipment: When symptoms of Altitude sickness appear, timely oxygen absorption can relieve the symptoms. Therefore, it is recommended to carry oxygen absorbing equipment such as portable oxygen cylinders or oxygen concentrators.

Nausea and vomiting: A typical symptom of altitude sickness. The low oxygen environment will affect the gastrointestinal function, resulting in digestive discomfort.

Shortness of breath: Another common symptom of altitude sickness. Due to the low oxygen content in the air, the body needs to breathe faster to get more oxygen.

Fatigue and malaise: A common symptom of altitude sickness. The low oxygen environment will cause the body's energy metabolism to slow down, resulting in fatigue.

Insomnia: Another common problem of altitude sickness, low oxygen environment affects the nervous system, resulting in reduced quality of sleep.

Dizziness and vertigo: a common symptom of Altitude sickness. Low oxygen environment will affect the balance function of the inner ear, resulting in a feeling of vertigo.

Palpitations and chest tightness: common manifestations of Altitude sickness. Low oxygen environment will increase the burden on the heart, leading to rapid heartbeat and chest tightness.

Loss of appetite: A common symptom of altitude sickness. The low oxygen environment affects the digestive system, resulting in loss of appetite.

Edema: A rare but serious symptom of high altitude reaction, low oxygen environment will lead to an increase in vascular permeability, triggering tissue edema.

Symptoms of Altitude sickness are varied, the severity varies from person to person, the above are the more common symptoms, but once the symptoms appear we should treat and prevent them in time, serious symptoms can be a crisis of human life. So how can we save our lives if we have symptoms? Let's look at the following

When Altitude sickness occurs, it can generally be treated by rest, diet care, oxygen intake, medication, hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatment and other methods. Once serious symptoms appear, seek medical attention promptly.

Rest: Oxygen content is low when entering plateau areas. If symptoms such as headache and dizziness occur, stop activities immediately and rest more.

Oxygen intake: Oxygen deficiency due to Altitude sickness can be treated with high-flow nasal cannula under doctor's guidance, which can directly increase the oxygen content in the blood and alleviate the lack of oxygen in the body.

Medication: You can take painkillers, aspirin enteric-coated tablets, ibuprofen extended-release capsules and other medications as prescribed by your doctor, which can improve the discomfort caused by Altitude sickness.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Treatment: If the symptoms are serious, the doctor can operate the hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatment, which can improve the lack of oxygen in the brain.
