Overview of Sayram Lake
As the largest alpine lake in Xinjiang, Sayram Lake is known as “the last tear of the Atlantic Ocean.” This title sounds both majestic and slightly tragic.
According to data, Sayram Lake has an average water depth of 46.4 meters, with a maximum depth of 92 meters. In addition, due to the small amount of sediment at the lake bottom and limited biological activity, it has become one of the lakes with the highest water transparency in China, with visibility reaching more than 10 meters.

Introduction to Sayram Lake
Sayram Lake (also called Sailimu Lake) is a provincial-level scenic tourist attraction in China and a National Key Scenic Area listed in the fifth batch. It is the highest-altitude and largest alpine lake in Xinjiang, renowned for its beautiful natural scenery.
The Sayram Lake scenic area is divided into six functional zones: the lakeside sightseeing area, grassland nomadic culture area, ecological conservation area, swan and rare bird habitat protection area, comprehensive tourism service area, and original ecological environment preservation area.

The Legend of Sayram Lake
A very long time ago, there was no lake here, only a fertile grassland covered with lush grass and blooming flowers. On this rich grassland lived a hardworking, kind, and beautiful Kazakh shepherd girl named Qiedan. Qiedan and a handsome and brave Kazakh horseman named Sideke lived and worked together, respecting and helping each other, and through their shared labor they developed a sincere and pure love.
One day, a demon king who was out hunting came to this place. He took a fancy not only to the grassland but also to the young and beautiful Qiedan, intending to seize both the land and the girl for himself. In order to escape his clutches, the young lovers mounted their horses and fled toward the deep mountains. The demon king sent his followers in pursuit. Suddenly, Sideke was struck by an arrow, fell from his horse, and died. Qiedan held him and wept bitterly.

At that moment, the demon king’s followers surrounded her. Fearless, with hatred flashing in her eyes, she desperately lifted a huge stone, intending to smash it at them. But just as she raised the stone, she was captured and dragged behind a horse. She cried out loudly, her voice echoing across the grassland.
Suddenly, from the place where she had lifted the stone, a towering column of water burst forth. The water quickly gathered into a surging flood, swiftly drowning the fleeing demon king and his followers. From that moment on, the vast grassland turned into a mighty lake.

Flower-Viewing Spots at Sayram Lake
Every year, the flower season at Sayram Lake is one of its most beautiful periods. From May to July, the grasslands and snow-capped mountains stage a “relay of flower seas,” turning Sayram Lake into a colorful palette.
Late May to early June: Globeflowers, white crocuses, poppies, tulips, cold-region primroses, and various wildflowers begin to bloom. The grassland gradually turns green while snow still remains on the mountains, creating stunning “flower sea + blue lake + snow mountain” photos.
Mid-June: The most spectacular period, with globeflowers, purple flowers, small yellow flowers, and poppies in full bloom. The lakeside grassland resembles a colorful carpet, and swans are often nearby.

Kele Yongzhu: A place to see both flowers and swans in the same frame. Bring some naan bread.
Waterside Beach: Swans gather here. In the afternoon, it is ideal for photographing “flowers + lake + swans.”

Along Dianjiang Platform: Fewer visitors, beautiful scenery, and occasional scenes of herders grazing among the flowers.
Four Seasons of Sayram Lake
Spring (April to May)
The lake surface begins to thaw. Ice crystals mix with melting water, forming unique ice-push landscapes. Grass along the shore starts to sprout, wildflowers bloom gradually, and unmelted snow-capped mountains remain in the distance. Swans and other migratory birds arrive one after another, presenting a vivid spring scene.

Summer (June to August)
The lake water is deep blue and crystal clear, shimmering under sunlight. Wildflowers of yellow, purple, pink, and other colors bloom across the grasslands, forming splendid flower seas. Together with the blue lake, snow-capped mountains, and white clouds, the scenery resembles “God’s palette.” Poppies sway in the wind across the hillsides.

Autumn (September to October)
The grasslands gradually turn golden, forming a striking contrast with the blue lake. The lake water becomes even clearer, migratory birds soar above, and at sunset the golden glow spreads across the surface, creating a grand and magnificent autumn view.

Winter (December to February or March)
The lake is covered with thick ice, displaying deep blue tones that sparkle like diamonds in sunlight. Blue ice, ice bubbles, ice pushes, and frost flowers appear in succession, creating a fairy-tale-like world. The winter sky is exceptionally blue, contrasting with white snow and blue ice, like a cold yet peerless beauty waiting for a lover who has not returned.
