Kalajun Grassland is a world-renowned alpine meadow in Ili, Xinjiang, featuring rolling grasslands, deep canyons, snow-capped peaks, and rich nomadic culture. Ideal for sightseeing, photography, and hiking.

The most beautiful grasslands in Xinjiang are found in Ili, and Kalajun Grassland is one of the most famous representatives of Xinjiang’s unique three-dimensional grassland landscapes.

Kalajun (also spelled Kalajun) means “black and vast grassland” in the Kazakh language. This area was once the capital of the Wusun Kingdom, the largest nomadic power in the Western Regions (ancient Xinjiang), as well as one of the largest horse-breeding grounds in ancient times. It is also located along the northern route of the ancient Silk Road.

Combining alpine meadows, deep canyons, rivers, snow peaks, and forests, Kalajun Grassland represents one of the most iconic natural landscape combinations in the Tianshan Mountains. Among them, East Kalajun Grassland and Kuokesu Grand Canyon are the most popular highlights. Visitors with sufficient time usually spend 1–2 days exploring these areas.

Kalajun Grassland Core Area

The core of Kalajun Grassland is formed by East and West Kalajun Grassland and is an important part of the Xinjiang Tianshan World Natural Heritage Site.
Snow peaks, forests, and grasslands are interwoven here, creating a highly layered landscape with rich biodiversity. The rolling alpine meadows feature soft and flowing curves and are famously known as the “Body-Shaped Grassland,” making this the most iconic and visited area.

Five Major Scenic Areas of Kalajun Grassland

Flower Terrace (Xianhua Platform)

Kalajun Grassland is characterized by alpine meadow landforms, and the Flower Terrace is the best place to admire wildflowers.
Starting in May, purple primroses bloom first, followed by globeflowers, anemones, thyme, aconite, and geraniums. The colorful flower fields stretch all the way to the foot of the snow mountains. Even outside the flowering season, grazing cattle and sheep create a classic grassland atmosphere.

Falcon Platform

Falcon Platform is located in the Kuledai Forest Gorge and was traditionally used by Kazakh people as a falcon training ground. It is also an excellent viewpoint overlooking the canyon landscape of Kalajun Grassland.
The gorge stretches over 50 kilometers, with dramatic elevation differences. Lush greenery dominates in spring and summer, while birch and poplar forests turn golden in autumn, making it an ideal place for photography and autumn scenery.

Rolling Waves Valley

Rolling Waves Valley is one of the most representative landforms in Kalajun Grassland.
From above, the grassland undulates like ocean waves, with natural gullies outlining smooth and elegant curves that resemble the contours of the human body. At sunset, changing light and shadows make this area a favorite spot for photographers.

Kuokesu Grand Canyon

Located deep within Kalajun Grassland, Kuokesu Grand Canyon is a natural wonder shaped by geological movements and glacial meltwater over millions of years.
Snow peaks, lakes, grasslands, pristine vegetation, and steep cliffs coexist within the canyon. Visitors can explore the area by boat or walk along the river valley. From late September to early October, golden grasslands, emerald lakes, and blue skies create the most stunning scenery of the year.

Crocodile Bay

Crocodile Bay lies in the core area of Kuokesu Grand Canyon and is named after a mountain ridge resembling a crocodile. The river displays milky white, dark green, and emerald hues under sunlight, making it highly distinctive.

Nine Bends and Eighteen Turns

The Kuokesu River winds through the canyon floor, forming the spectacular “Nine Bends and Eighteen Turns.” Morning mist often drifts above the river, grassland, and scattered yurts, creating a serene and majestic grassland scene.

Central Tianshan Snow Peak Scenic Area

The Central Tianshan Snow Peak Scenic Area is one of the five major zones of Kalajun Grassland, with elevations ranging from 1,000 meters to 3,950 meters.
Following winding plateau roads, visitors can reach the foot of permanently snow-covered peaks. The Qiongkushitai Historical Village within this area was once an important stop on the ancient Wusun Trail and still preserves traditional Kazakh wooden houses and lifestyles, earning it the title of a “living fossil” of grassland civilization.
