When it comes to hiking in China, popular routes like Tiger Leaping Gorge, Mount Emei, or the Great Wall often come to mind. Yet deep within the mountains of western Sichuan lies a hidden gem—Dangling Village. Located approximately 400 kilometers from Chengdu in the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, this pristine village preserves the rich cultural heritage of Tibetan traditions. Today, I'll take you into this undeveloped Tibetan village to experience a hidden Chinese hiking journey.

Dangling Village

Why choose Dangling Village for hiking?

Unlike many overcrowded hiking destinations in China, Dangling Village retains its pure, untouched charm. Walking through the village, you'll see ancient Tibetan stone houses, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and yaks grazing freely on the grasslands. You can witness their traditional way of life firsthand, stay in cozy homestays, and savor authentic Tibetan home-cooked meals. Perched at 3,400 meters above sea level, Dangling Village is embraced by mountains, forests, and alpine meadows. From here, you can explore two stunning lakes—Hulu Lake and Zhuoyongcuo Lake—each showcasing the unique beauty of the Sichuan Plateau.

China Hiking: Dangling Village Itinerary Guide

Hiking Along the Keru Valley to Calabash Lake

Your “Hiking China” journey begins in the Keru River Valley. This 16-kilometer round-trip hike (approximately 7 hours total) takes you through dense pine forests, lush meadows, and alongside the clear, murmuring Keru River. As the altitude rises, the air grows crisp and fresh, while distant snow-capped peaks gradually come into view, creating a breathtakingly beautiful landscape along the way.

After several hours of hiking, you'll arrive at Calabash Lake—named for its gourd-like shape. In summer, the lakeside is carpeted with lush green grass dotted with wildflowers. The crystal-clear waters reflect the blue sky, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere that makes every step of the hike feel exceptionally worthwhile. This is an ideal resting spot where you can enjoy a picnic prepared by the guesthouse and fully immerse yourself in this tranquil setting.

Hiking Along the Keru Valley to Calabash Lake

Optional Challenge: Hike to Zhuoyong Lake

If you have the stamina, we highly recommend the additional 6-kilometer (round-trip) hike to Zhuoyong Lake at 4,300 meters above sea level. This is the best vantage point for a panoramic view of Gourd Lake. The path to Zhuoyong Lake is somewhat steep, but the scenery upon arrival is absolutely breathtaking: At 4,300 meters above sea level, you'll gain a bird's-eye view of the entire Gourd Lake basin. The Kele River Valley stretches out in the distance, and on clear days, you can see snow-capped peaks encircling the area. This breathtaking scenery will become an unforgettable memory of your “Hiking China” journey.

Hike to Zhuoyong Lake

If you prefer a more relaxed pace, you can stay at Hulu Lake to rest, take photos, or chat with local herders tending their flocks. Whichever way you choose, you'll return to Dangling Village by evening—perhaps a bit tired, but deeply fulfilled.

Practical Tips for Dangling Village Trekking

Altitude Sickness Prevention: The highest point (Zhuoyongcuo Lake) reaches 4,300 m. Acclimatize to high altitudes beforehand. Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity on your first day in the village. If prone to altitude sickness, bring relevant medication.

Clothing & Gear: Weather is unpredictable at high altitudes. Even in summer, bring a warm jacket (down or fleece), waterproof hiking boots, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Pack a backpack for water, snacks, and your camera.

Respect Local Culture: Dangling Village is a traditional Tibetan community. Respect local customs—always ask permission before photographing residents or religious sites, and remove shoes when entering homestays.
