History and Culture of Jiayuguan

Jiayuguan, the westernmost pass of the Ming Great Wall, is honored as the “First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven.” It was first built in 1372 during the Ming Dynasty and has a history of over 600 years.

It was constructed nine years earlier than Shanhaiguan, the eastern end of the Great Wall. Located at the narrowest section of the Hexi Corridor, it is also known as the “First Strategic Pass of Hexi.”

After General Feng Sheng of the Ming Dynasty regained control of Hexi, the pass was built on the Gobi Desert and expanded over more than a century into a grand military fortress.

To the west lies an ancient battlefield, while to the east is the perennial Jiuyan Spring, an important water source. The fortress features multiple defensive layers with a tightly structured military system, making it easy to defend and difficult to attack.

Jiayuguan Pass (Great Wall Fortress)

Jiayuguan Pass

Jiayuguan Pass is the western starting point of the Ming Great Wall and is widely recognized as the “First Pass Under Heaven.”

It is one of the most well-preserved ancient military defense systems in China. The fortress consists of inner city, outer city, and moat, forming a complete defensive structure.

Built in 1372, it predates Shanhaiguan and served as a key checkpoint along the Silk Road.

Overhanging Great Wall (Suspended Wall)

The Overhanging Great Wall is an outstanding example of Ming military engineering, constructed in 1539.

It forms a complete defense system together with Jiayuguan Pass and the First Beacon Tower. Stretching about 750 meters, some sections are nearly vertical due to the 45-degree ridge, earning its name as the “hanging wall.”

It serves as the northern defensive barrier of Jiayuguan.

First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall

First Beacon Tower Jiayuguan

This is the westernmost beacon tower of the Ming Great Wall, echoing the eastern “Old Dragon Head” at Shanhaiguan.

It was used to transmit military signals toward southern regions and the Qilian Mountains using smoke and fire. It represents an essential part of the ancient communication and defense system.
