About Yamdrok Lake

Nestled on the northern slope of the Himalayas, south of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, Yamdrok Lake in Tibet covers 638 km²—about 70 times the size of Hangzhou’s West Lake! With 21 islands, lush pastures, and abundant birdlife, it’s a paradise for photographers and nature lovers. The shoreline twists like coral branches, giving the lake its Tibetan nickname, “Coral Lake.”

The lake’s depth ranges from 20–40 meters, with a maximum of 60 meters. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks including Nyenchen Tanglha Peak (7,206 m), the lake creates a natural painting: “snow mountains as a screen, turquoise lake as a mirror.”

Religious and Cultural Significance

Yamdrok Tso Lake Tibet is sacred in Tibetan Buddhism. It is believed to be the incarnation of a dragon goddess and the home of a female protector deity. Pilgrims come here to purify their souls and seek guidance in recognizing reincarnated Lamas.

Interestingly, locals never fish in the lake, despite an estimated 800 million kg of fish.

Reasons include:

  • Religious taboos: Fish are seen as carriers of souls; eating them is forbidden.
  • Ecological beliefs: Tibetan Buddhism encourages non-violence; fish are considered sacred.
  • Policy protection: The lake is home to endangered species like the black-necked crane.
