In Yunnan, there are ancient cities, high mountains, lakes, wetlands, and countless specialty foods such as Naxi barbecue, crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, steamed stone pot fish, and Bai ethnic group sour and spicy fish. You can also experience the cultural customs of different ethnic groups such as the Naxi, Mosuo, Bai, and Dai. Today, I would like to share with you a hidden gem of a tourist attraction: Dianchi Lake in Kunming, Yunnan.
Dianchi Lake, also known as Kunming Lake, Kunming Pool, Diannan, and Dianhai. Located in the southwest of Kunming City, Yunnan Province, it is fed by rivers such as the Panlong River. The lake surface is at an altitude of 1,886 meters, covering an area of 330 square kilometers. It is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan Province, known as the “Pearl of the Plateau,” and one of the largest freshwater lakes in China. The scenery here is breathtaking, with clear waters, making it an ideal place for leisurely walks and boat tours.

Below are the must-visit attractions and meaningful activities at Dianchi Lake:
Recommended attractions around Dianchi Lake:
Haigeng Dam
This place is well-known to many, as large flocks of seagulls migrate here each winter. The best time to watch the seagulls is in the morning, creating a scene straight out of a fairy tale.

Xishan Forest Park
Nature lovers must not miss this! It is recommended to purchase a combined ticket to explore both Dianchi Lake and Xishan Forest Park. Take the Dianchi Cableway directly to Xishan, and don't miss the Xishan Longmen Cableway either. The semi-open cable cars offer breathtaking views of the entire Dianchi Lake—absolutely stunning!

Haihong Wetland Park
This wetland park is very close to the city center and boasts stunning scenery. In summer, it's lush and green, and in winter, there are redwood trees. You can also take a glass-bottomed boat ride on the water (for a fee). There are particularly many seagulls in winter, and the best time to watch them is around 6 PM. If you want to watch seagulls with your kids without traveling too far, this is a great option.

Baofeng Wetland Park
This wetland park is also free and has breathtaking scenery. What’s particularly interesting is their submerged walkway, where you can enjoy a free immersive fish-watching experience, feeling like you’re watching a reality TV show. If you have time, you must visit here!

Tea Horse Flower Street
Located on the eastern shore of Dianchi Lake, this area is themed around the Tea Horse Ancient Trail culture. It features traditional-style architecture and historical relics of the Tea Horse Ancient Trail, making it an excellent place to delve into Yunnan's Tea Horse culture.

Yunnan Museum
As Yunnan Province's largest comprehensive museum, it showcases Yunnan's history, culture, and art, offering an excellent opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the region.

Longmen Scenic Area
Located on the southwest side of Dianchi Lake, this area is themed around the Longmen Grottoes, featuring ancient caves and exquisite stone carvings that showcase rich history and culture.

Now that we've explored the scenic areas around Dianchi Lake, let's take a look at the Dianchi Lake route I've curated.
Dianchi Lake Route: A 20,000-step hike
Haigeng Dam 9:00 AM–11:00 AM
Highlights: Get up close with Siberian red-billed gulls—remember to bring breadcrumbs, and the gulls will follow your hand as they fly.
Note: The UV rays at high altitudes are extremely strong! Bring sunglasses and a hat. After 2:00 PM, the gulls will become less numerous.
Take a 10-minute taxi ride to Yunnan Ethnic Village 11:30 AM–3:00 PM
The “Highland Call” performance at 1:30 PM features the stunning Dai ethnic group's peacock dance.
Must-try food: Yi ethnic group's grilled milk cake (8 yuan per piece) and Bai ethnic group's crossing-the-bridge noodle soup with a broth so fresh it'll make your eyebrows drop.
Take bus route 44 directly to Guandu Ancient Town from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Even more charming after dark
Must-try: Sesame-filled Guandu pancakes from the Eyeglass Pancake Shop, 3 yuan per piece
The brick carvings on the Ming Dynasty Golden Buddha Pagoda are stunning, and the Pu'er tea at the Square Street Tea Shop is a great value at 5 yuan for unlimited refills
Return: There is a bus hub at the ancient town entrance, and a taxi to the city center costs approximately 15 yuan

Tips:
Bring a jacket! The wind is strong and the temperature difference is significant by Dianchi Lake, but the ethnic village has plenty of tree shade and is actually warmer.
There are luggage storage lockers at the entrance of the ethnic village.
Choose freshly baked Guandu pancakes; the cold ones have a much poorer texture.
There are no proper restaurants near the Haigeng Dam, so it’s recommended to bring some snacks.
Wear light-colored clothing throughout the trip! It pairs well with the colorful buildings of the ethnic village and the red walls of the ancient town.
Dianchi Lake Food Recommendations:
The display of seasonal fresh vegetables is dazzling, and every dish emits an enticing aroma.
Fried small carp is a must-try delicacy. It’s so crispy that even the bones can be chewed, and the fish meat remains fresh and sweet. Carp without bones is simply perfect.
Live, lively river shrimp, after being blanched, have a tender texture that leaves a lasting impression.
Braised pork is another must-try specialty. The Yunnan-style char siu pork has a slight sweetness, neither dry nor greasy, making it very appetizing.
Yunnan-style soup—seaweed and taro soup—has a delicious flavor that’s simply amazing.
